Less than two weeks after being hit by the Mangkhut typhoon, the biggest and the strongest storm to hit Hong Kong in its living memory, since records began, the RHKYC having taken stock of damage, have announced that they are pleased to be able to confirm that ASAF Youth Sailing Cup #2 and the Hong Kong Race Week will still be going ahead as planned in February 2019 and the NOR will be published shortly.
Luxury vessels, dinghies and other boats of various sizes were battered in Sai Kung, while two yacht clubs on Middle Island – off Deep Water Bay on Hong Kong Island – faced destruction on a scale not seen before.
The Aberdeen Boat Club at Middle Island lost a lot of small boats, and the clubhouse was described as “practically destroyed”. Hebe Haven Yacht Club had water clear across the car park and huge numbers of speedboats blown off the three-tier outdoor racking.
Over the years, the HKRW has grown to be the biggest event of the ASAF Youth Sailing Cup Series and last year a record number of over 250 sailors from over 13 countries participated in the event.
Peter Davis, the Regatta Chairman, said “due to the number of boats that have been damaged, there is still a level of uncertainty surrounding the charter fleet, and we are squaring this up before activating the entry system”.
In the meantime, please block off from the 12 to 17 February in your calendar and keep checking back for more news on our website and the Hong Kong Race Week website www.hongkongraceweek.com
