The third event of the ASAF Youth Sailing Championships 2015 – 16 concluded at the National Sailing Centre, Singapore with a thrilling day, full of action. The top 10 athletes in each class were facing off in the medal races, while the rest prepared for a final fun race.
Ashore, the atmosphere was serene with all of the young guns taking their positions to watch the exciting medal races. These races constitute the epitome of dinghy sailing – with double points giving more opportunities for sailors to attack from behind, and at the same time allowing spectators to enjoy some top level racing.
The top Optimist youngsters relished the chance to get a taste of Olympic Medal Racing in what was an intense battle. Incredibly close racing saw Daniel Hung of Singapore secure the medal race win, enough to give him the gold. For Jonathan Lio a 5th place in the medal race was enough to keep a good distance from Malaysia’s Muhammad Izzudin, the pair placed 3rd and 4th overall respectively. Jodie Lai, the only girl in the top ten fleet was yet again on good form to finish 2nd in the medal race and 2nd overall. It was 10th place for Hong Kong’s Duncan Gregor who performed under the close eye of his team mates.
In an exciting medal race in the 29er class with a frisky breeze Koh Yi Nian & Wong Riji scored the bullet to secure the gold. Samuel Neo & Xavier Ng Yao Jun finished second outfoxing Bertha Han and Evangeline Tan who finally ended the regatta in 3rd overall.
In BIC Techno Malaysia’s Illham Bin Wahab was the star of the week dominating 11 out of 12 races, including the medal race. In the 4.7 Laser class, Lu Junrui maintained his winning performance to take the gold! In the Laser Radial, Bernie Chin had already secured gold ahead of the medal race, but his 2nd place finish today proved his superiority.
Prizes & awards were presented to a sea of applause and the teams were already looking forward to the final event at Abu Dhabi scheduled to commence on 06 April 2016.

The ASAF Youth Sailing Cup is a series of four well established regatta’s in Asia for Youth Classes. The aim of the ASAF Youth Sailing Cup is to provide the best possible competition for Youth Classes. The series guarantees the highest level of event and race management.
The Final of the ASAF Youth Sailing Cup series is scheduled at Abu Dhabi, during 05 – 09 April 2016.
