The Asian Sailing Championships 2018 from 18 until 25 June this year brings a new perspective to sailing in Asia. The new National Sailing Centre at Jakarta, Indonesia is reaching its capacity limits. Built in a record time of six months, the new centre offers state of the art facilities for sailors, officials, spectators and those keen to join the sport.
“All in all we are talking about a record number of 224 sailors from about 15 nations. This is great”, said the President of Asian Sailing Federation, Dr Malav Shroff. Registration numbers are on the one hand a feedback for the good work in the previous years, “but we also are aware of the tail wind we are receiving from the Asian Games 2018 in August at Jakarta, Indonesia”, stated Dr Malav Shroff.
With the aim of promoting gender equity at the Asian Sailing Championships and Asian Games, this year’s Asian Sailing Championship will see equal number of Male and Female participants across the 12 classes / disciplines.
The sailors want to prove their abilities in Jakarta. The Olympic classes are set up with top-level sailors. Above all the teams from Asia also use Asian Sailing Championships 2018 as a testing ground for their preparations for the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta taking place seven weeks later. For many National Teams it is in the end about qualifying to participate in the Asian Games 2018.
“The completion of the Asian Sailing Championships 2018 with one to two special events is our clear strategy. We are making up our mind to bring the right highlights to Jakarta”, explained Malav.
More than 224 regatta participants, 170 boats, 12 classes/disciplines, four race courses on five days – these are the numbers of the Asian Sailing Championships 2018, where over thousands of visitors are expected.
The innovations in the surroundings and ashore also fit to this huge event which is happening on the water during the Asian Sailing Championship 2018. The cooperation with the Indonesian Asian Games Organising Committee (INASGOC) and the Indonesian Navy will provide an impetus to sustainability. Waste separation, rapidly degradable cups and on-site information about waste avoidance are some of the steps being initiated during this Championships.
The Asian Sailing Championships 2018 is above all pure sailing experience. Well before Admiral Dorwanto, President of Honor, Asian Sailing Federation and Dr Malav Shroff, President Asian Sailing Federation give the official starting signal on 20th Jun 2018 for the biggest Asian Sailing Championships, fireworks will begin on the evening of 19 Jun 2018 at the official welcome ceremony and dinner.
