Feisty conditions greeted the sailors on the first day of the India International Regatta in the Bay of Bengal today.
A North-East wind blew steady at an average of 17 knots gusting to over 20 knots. These were glorious conditions in which the top sailors excelled, but the bottom fleet had a difficult time of it and the rescue team had their hands full getting some of the youngest sailors back to the safety of the harbour.
Three races were completed in each of the four classes as scheduled. The race course was laid out North of the shipping channel in the open sea about a mile from the harbour mouth. The 29ers had to complete 3 upwind-downwind loops while the other classes sailed a trapezoidal course.
In the 29er class Varsha and Aishwarya excelled, well as they should, and won all three races with a huge margin. The other sailors found the conditions a little hard and a couple of boats actually went back to shore. The second place at the end of day one was tied between the Girls team from Sweden, Hanna Hoije and Emma Fridolfsson and the NSS Bhopal team Pavan Verma and Navneet Vishwakarma.
In the Laser Radial the results were exactly the same in all three races. Riley Cameron from Hong Kong won all three races, Vishnu Saravanan finished 2nd in all three and Nethra Kumanan finished 3rd in each. In Laser 4.7, Hong Kong excelled once more with Christopher Bezy won Race 1 and 3 with 2nd place in Race 2, while Vishnu Sujeesh won Race 2 with 2nd positions in the other two races. Shikhar Garg ended the day in third place.
In the Optimist, Aniketh Rajaram revelled in these tough conditions and is on the top of the leaderboard at the end of Day 1. Ramya Saravanan had a great day out winning the first race and closely follows Aniketh in second place overall and Mahesh Balachander is in third position.
