Olympic sailing classes from Asia and Africa compete in Mussanah, Oman for a place in the Olympic Games

Mussanah, Oman will host the Asian and African continental qualification race course for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, to be held in the middle of this year. The event will be the continental qualifier to compete in six classes of Olympic sailing: Laser and Laser Radial, 49er and 49er FX and RSX Men and Women. The event  scheduled during 01 to 08 April 21 includes races, plus the Medal Race, on three different race courses.

More than 100 entries from more than 20 nationalities from Asia and Africa are registered for the event. 

The qualification period commenced with the 2018 Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, where about forty percent of the total quota was awarded to the highest finishing NOCs. Six places were be available in the men’s Laser and women’s Laser Radial classes at the 2018 Asian Games and 2019 Pan American Games and sixty-one more were distributed to the sailors at the World Championships for all boats in 2019. The balance places were to be awarded during the continental qualification events scheduled in 2020, however, most of the events were postponed in view of the Covid19 pandemic.

At stake here at Mussanah, Oman are 1 place each for the 49er, 49erFX, RSX Men, RSX Women and two spots each for Laser Standard and Laser Radial.
